Psalm 46

God Our Refuge -- Be Still and Know

Nations are in uproar, the kingdoms fall;
He raised His voice, and the earth melted...
He makes wars to cease to the ends of the earth;
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear,
He burns the shields with fire.

"Be still and know that I am God--
                    I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Psalm 46: 6,9-10

This reminds me much of the world today, a scene of worldwide confusion, and it will only  get worse before it gets better.  The psalm describes nations in an uproar, kingdoms are falling all around.  There is "clash of weapons" and war is imminent.  Then in the middle of it all God intervenes.  Everything comes to a standstill and to His own people He says:
"BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD.''

This is a prophetic picture of today.  Kingdoms in an uproar and the ever present threat of war.  In its midst we must listen to what God is saying here, as the only way to have hope and peace for our own soul.  "be still... be still and know..."   It is wisdom not to let the world around us disturb our own spirit.  No matter what the pressures we must continually cultivate inner stillness -- that permits us to hear what God is saying.

God has always known what the future will bring. I am not unprepared in what I will do.  When all my purposes have been met, I will intervene.  And we must not give a place to fear.  In Jesus last prophetic discourse, He said this:
"When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift your hears, because your redemption is drawing near..."  Luke 21:28

Help us Lord, to maintain an inner stillness so to hear Your voice in spite of all confusion around me.  Amen.

Psalm 46
      1     God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
     2     Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change and though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea--
     3     Though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains quake at its swelling pride.      Selah

     4     There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy dwelling places of the Most High.
     5     God is in the midst of her, she will not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.
     6     The nations made an uproar, the kingdoms tottered; He raised His voice, the earth melted.
     7     The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold.     Selah

     8     Come, behold the works of the Lord, who has wrought desolations in the earth.
     9     He makes wars to cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two.  He burns the chariots with fire.
     10     "Cease striving and know that I am God--
                   I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
     11     The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold.
