In God Alone
Find rest, O my soul, in God alone--my salvation comes from Him.
My soul finds rest in God alone-
My salvation comes from Him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation-
He is my fortress. I will never be shaken...
A Psalm of David
1 For God alone I patiently wait, He is the one who delivers me.
2 He only is my rock
and my salvation, my stronghold, I shall not be greatly
shaken.
3
How long will you threaten a man, that you may murder him, all of you, like
a leaning wall, like a tottering fence?
4 They have counseled only to thrust him down
from his high position, they delight in
falsehood, they bless with their
mouth but inwardly they curse. Selah.
5 My soul, wait
in silence for God only, for my hope is from Him.
6 He only is my
rock and my salvation, my stronghold—I shall not be shaken.
7 On God
my salvation and my glory rest, the rock of
my strength, my refuge is in God.
8 Trust
in Him at all times, O people—
Pour out your heart before Him, God is a
refuge for us. Selah.
9 Men of low degree are only vanity
and men of rank are a lie.
When they are weighed in the scales, all of them together are lighter than air.
10
Do not trust in oppression and do not vainly
hope in robbery. If riches increase, do
not set your heart upon it.
11
Once
God has spoken, twice I have heard
this:
That power belongs to God—
12 And lovingkindness is
Yours, O Lord, for You recompense a man according
to his work.
The difficulty
with applying Psalm 62 is that very few of us have ever been in the desperate
straits that David was in... evil men threatening David’s life and scheming how to replace him as king. But as followers
in Christ, we can know what it is to know in life’s most threatening times, there can be peace if
God alone is your salvation and refuge.
There is one word that stands out in these verses. The word alone. David speaks of blessings that can only come from God Himself.
— First and up front is the blessing of Salvation
Closely associated are rest, strength (the rock) , protection (the fortress), and hope.
The last four are all byproducts of the first--Salvation.
The only true source of salvation is God Himself - God alone. Salvation does not depend on anything else like God plus the law, or God plus the church - or anything else. In that we will dishonor Him in His all-efficiency. It all depends on GOD ALONE.

David adds:
— “From
Him is my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold;
I
shall not be greatly shaken.” (62:6). David refers to God’s deliverance
from his enemies.
— Trusting in God, we are secure.
— “Trust
in Him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge
for us.”
A great verse!
He trusted in God, he poured out his heart to God, he took refuge in God. He’s
telling us to do the same. What God was to David in his extreme trial, He can
be to you in any crisis.
